It isn’t working any more
Sometimes, everything gets all messed up. Even broken. It’s like you wake up one day and all your super powers vanished over night. The tricks you use to cajole the kids in to the car seat don’t work. You hit the snooze button, like always, but now it takes 5 or 6 times for you to muster the energy to get out of bed. The dark chocolate you have in the afternoon just leaves you with a bellyache. You sit down to do something at work that you’ve always prided yourself on being great at, and it feels hollow.
What’s going on?
What we do, how we think, how we are is constantly evolving. There is no figuring out what kind of a person you want to be and that staying that way forevermore. (Sorry! Bummer, I know, but the one constant in life is change, and that goes for us too.) What works for us will inevitably stop working one day. Seemingly all of a sudden, we don’t get the results we used to, we aren’t satisfied with where we are, and we feel our energy draining away because of the effort we’re putting toward things that are keeping us stuck.
I was there not so long ago. After my second child was born, I spent two years pitching and writing articles even though when I sat down to write every cell in my body thought, “I don’t want to do this.” I did it because freelancing had given me such a rush such a short time ago, I thought maybe I just needed to keep putting one foot in front of the other until my groove magically came back.
Except it didn’t.
Who I thought I was wasn’t working any more. I resisted acknowledging what was going on for a long time. But ignoring a lot of the signs that I’d undergone a shift – weight gain, body aches, a short temper, a dwindling bank account – didn’t make them go away. In fact, I just got more and more disappointed in myself that I wasn’t changing my behavior to match my changing desires. It wasn’t until I finally admitted that my old ways of being weren’t working any more that I truly started to evolve in to a happier person. Owning where you are is a crucial step, ‘cause you can’t change a habit you don’t know (or won’t admit) you have.
When to admit it isn’t working any more, and a teleclass
The tough thing about our ways of being is that they work until they don’t work anymore. When this happens, it can feel bewildering, disheartening, or even tragic.
The good news is that what feels like a breakdown is actually the first step toward a breakthrough. When your usual strategies stop working, it means you’re primed for newer, better, more fulfilling ways of going about your life to be born. And what a beautiful thing that is. It’s worth every moment of discomfort along the way; I can promise you that.
I’ve learned so much about using a mind-body practice to access my intuition, so that when I notice things in my life that aren’t working any more, I know what to do instead of merely waiting for things to get better.
